Prologue

Hello, Reader -

My name is Lexi LoMonaco. Originally from Anchorage, Alaska, my journey in life has taken me to many states in the Lower 48. Two years ago I found myself back in Alaska again, only this time in Fairbanks. I live here full-time with my husband, John, and our golden retriever, Daisy. Together the three of us enjoy all things outdoors, especially the rural areas. Whether it’s hiking, fishing, or enjoying the view, we would both agree that Fairbanks is a hidden gem. I love to sing, play guitar, and spend time with family. I have been in the Finance industry for 9 years and I am currently studying at The University of Alaska Fairbanks for my Bachelor of Business Administration. My long-term goal is to teach Personal Finance at a University one day to help college students financially prepare for the real world.

When it comes to my relationship with art, I would say that I prefer to appreciate art more than I enjoy creating it. In the past, I have done pencil sketches and oil paintings. However, I would much prefer to go to a museum! Oil paintings are a favorite of mine. Since moving to Fairbanks, I have visited the Museum of the North more times than I can count. The oil paintings on the second floor are so incredibly unique and have the most beautiful frames. I never get tired of seeing them. For an example of my love for oil paintings, I included a picture of The Storm on the Sea of Galilee by Rembrandt, 1633. I have always felt that because of the richness of oil paint, it has the ability to make an already powerful image even more compelling and emotional.

  2. What a worthwhile career goal. I know so many people that are my age (over 60) and they haven't got a clue of how to make ends meet and how they are going to retire. I couldn't agree more - the paintings on the second floor are amazing. I know many of the artists whose works are on display. Welcome to the class - I had to sign on via my YouTube email.

  3. Always interesting to hear how many people happen to leave Alaska and find their way back to finish developing their careers. Glad it is working out for you and you are able to enjoy yourself. Hope you have a good semester.

  4. It’s great to hear about your journey back to Alaska and the joy you find in the outdoors with your husband and Daisy. I’ve traveled around the world, but ironically, I’ve never made it to Alaska. I’d love to hear more about what the outdoor scenery is like there! Are there any national parks or natural places that really captivate you? I appreciate nature as well, and I hope to visit Alaska one day.
Hiking sounds fantastic, especially in such a beautiful setting. If you’re ever in New York, I recommend checking out Cold Spring, which isn’t too far from the city. The views of the Hudson River are breathtaking, though I can only imagine Alaska’s vistas must be on a whole different level!
I think it’s wonderful that you aspire to teach Personal Finance. Financial literacy is so important, and not everyone has the privilege of receiving sound financial advice from their parents about taxes, budgeting, and investing. Educating college students in this area is a meaningful goal, and I’m sure you’ll make a significant impact!
Your appreciation for oil paintings, especially Rembrandt’s work, really resonates with me. It makes total sense that as a nature lover, you’re drawn to a painting that captures such dramatic water scenes. I also love Monet and was fortunate enough to see some of his pieces at the National Gallery in London, including “Snow Scene at Argenteuil” and “La Pointe de la Hève, Sainte-Adresse.”
